“The Frauen Vieren”

The first mention of the Women’s Guild was in the May 11, 1919 minutes.  The women wanted a spot of their very own to hold meetings, so a small room in the basement of the church was created.  They installed a stove to heat the room, and the ladies started to meet and called themselves “The Frauen Vieren”.

The women were to meet once each month and make a 10 cent contribution.   One lady would come early and light the stove to heat up the room and another lady would bring something for lunch.   They would bring material to be cut out and to take home to be sewn into aprons which were later sold to the public.  Families had the ‘Ladies Aid’ at their homes in the summer time and invited friends and neighbors.  After World War II, the meetings were held at the church with supper served to the public.

In the 1950’s, the monthly suppers were discontinued and Women’s Guild, as it was now called, met in the afternoon for worship, a business meeting, and a program followed by lunch.  In 1991, a noon meal for members and husbands followed by a program was begun.

After discontinuing the monthly suppers, the Guild held a big chicken supper in the fall, which for many years was a smorgasbord.  After these ended, the Guild began holding a Christmas Bazaar which is still the annual fundraiser.

In addition to the Bazaar, the Women’s Guild serves funeral lunches, donates to local organizations, organizes Meals on Wheels, entertains at the Manor, and we enjoy honoring our members over 80 years of age. The Guild is the right arm of the church, always ready to help with any new project.

The Women’s Guild meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at noon.  Please join us anytime for lunch and a short program.
